Did you know that Cave Spring is not part of the park system?
We rely entirely on the community for support. Your support allows
Cave Spring to provide education concerning the stewardship of
the natural environment and cultural history of the Kansas City
area and to maintain an urban nature oasis within the city limits.
The Cave Spring Association is dedicated to preserving the natural
beauty and historical significance of this wooded 36-acre park.
The site includes an interpretive center, easily accessible walking
trails, pond, cave, and all the scenic beauty nature has to offer.
The Cave Spring Association is a non-profit group, which maintains
the park and provides programs about history and nature along
with badge programs for Scouts.
Many people don't realize what lies right in their own back
yard! Cave Spring was the jumping off point for the many wagon
trains heading West in the 1840's. Historic swales these wagons
left behind can still be seen a little ways down the road at another
property we are preserving at 85th & Manchester in Kansas
City. The deep ruts, which scarred the prairie, are still easily
visible 160 years later and the Cave Spring Association has recently
purchased them to preserve them for future generations.
The area known as Cave Spring was once owned by President Truman's
grandfather. In the 1930's it was a country club where members
enjoyed swimming, fishing, boating, and golf. The native stone
ruins of the summer cottages can still be found tucked into the
nooks and crannies of the Park.
The small cave and spring which gives the area its name is available
for viewing and visitors can observe the abundant wildlife throughout
the park while enjoying the trails. Each season brings a unique
beauty to the area, and the trails are open each and every day
of the year.
Memberships offer preferred reservations for the Picnic Pavilion
& educational programs, a quarterly "Trailblazer"
newsletter, and discount tickets to events.
More importantly, a membership offers the satisfaction of helping
to preserve a unique nature and historical center.
